Mark your calendars for four weeks of film for ages 3-18! The 2015 New York International Children’s Film Festival is about to warm up your winter and give you a great option for culture that the kids will love. Starting next week until mid March your family has the chance to see exceptional films–some never seen before.
While I love Disney as much as the next mom (Let it Go! indeed), I also value the small films. Introducing my kids to the art of filmmaking is important. Films explain different cultures, share different viewpoints and help us set our imaginations free.
What to expect? A wide variety from shorts to long format from animation to drama–there’s something for everyone. On the website all the films have brief synapses and a suggested age-range. Opening night brings the newest feature from Japan’s Studio Ghibli –When Marnie Was Here is a story of friendship, mystery, and discovery that delivers stirring emotions and breathtaking animation. When shy, artistic Anna moves to the seaside to live with her aunt and uncle, she stumbles upon an old mansion surrounded by marshes, and the mysterious young girl, Marnie, who lives there. The two girls instantly form a unique connection and friendship that blurs the lines between fantasy and reality. As the days go by, a nearly magnetic pull draws Anna back to the Marsh House again and again, and she begins to piece together the truth surrounding her strange new friend. Based on the novel by Joan G. Robinson, and directed by Hiromasa Yonebayashi (The Secret World of Arriety). In Japanese with English subtitles.
